Canada Post Graduate Work Permit: A Detailed Comprehensive Guide

The Canada Post Graduate Work Permit (PGWP) is a fantastic opportunity for international students who have completed their studies at a designated learning institution (DLI) in Canada. This permit allows graduates to stay and work in Canada temporarily, providing a chance to gain valuable work experience in their field of study.

Eligibility Criteria for PGWP

Not every graduate automatically qualifies for a PGWP. It’s crucial to ensure that both the institution and the specific program are eligible. Here are some key points to consider:

Online Studies and PGWP

The rules regarding online studies have evolved, particularly in light of the COVID-19 pandemic:

  • Studies Outside Canada: Any time spent studying online at a PGWP-eligible DLI from outside Canada between March 2020 and August 31, 2022, will count towards the length of your PGWP. However, time spent studying outside of Canada after December 31, 2023, will not count towards your PGWP.
  • Studies in Canada: Until August 31, 2024, at least 50% of your program must be completed either online or in class in Canada. Starting September 1, 2024, at least 50% of your program must be completed in class in Canada.

Duration of Your PGWP

The validity of your PGWP depends on the length of your study program and the expiry date of your passport:

  • Master’s Degree Programs: Starting February 15, 2024, students graduating from master’s programs that are less than 2 years but at least 8 months long may be eligible for a 3-year PGWP. Programs shorter than 8 months do not qualify.
  • Other Programs: Programs less than 8 months long are not eligible for a PGWP. Programs that are at least 8 months but less than 2 years may result in a PGWP valid for the same length as the study program. For programs lasting 2 years or more, graduates may receive a 3-year PGWP.
  • Multiple Programs: If you graduate from multiple eligible programs, you can combine the lengths of each program to apply for a single PGWP, provided each program is at least 8 months long.

Important Considerations on Canada Post Graduate Work Permit

Ensure your passport is valid for the entire duration for which you are eligible for a PGWP. If your passport expires before the full validity of your PGWP, you will receive a permit valid until your passport’s expiry date. You will need to extend your PGWP to cover the full period you are eligible for, which typically requires applying on paper if instructed.
